Have you tried our mayhaw jelly yet? One of the South’s greatest culinary treasures, mayhaw jelly is delicious slathered on a piece of toast or a fresh-from-the-oven biscuit.
Found in the swamps and rivers of the Southern U.S., mayhaw is small, tart-to-tasteless fruit that looks a little like a cranberry. They’re not very tasty right off the tree, but they make delicious juices, jams, jellies, syrups, and even wine.
Mayhaw wasn’t popular among the indigenous Americans as they were hard to forage from the swamps and didn’t taste like they were worth the bother. The fruit didn’t become popular until Antebellum times when foragers found that the fruit made great jelly and syrups. Since then, it’s been served with everything from ice cream to poultry.
